About Me
My name is Marcus Orr. I’m 28 years old and live in the small city of Graham, North Carolina. I’m married to a wonderful wife, Lauren, and have been blessed to have two of the most amazing children in the world.
The purpose of this website is to glorify God by providing content and commentary to help equip believers to change their lives, families, churches and communities.
For the last few years, I’ve been working full-time as a deputy sheriff and I’m currently assigned as a domestic violence investigator. The work is very interesting, but mainly serves as income to support my family while searching for a full-time ministry opportunity and continuing my education. I completed my undergrad studies in history and political science at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 2001 and earned a master of divinity in Christian counseling from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in 2004. Currently, I’m continuing my studies through the University of South Africa where I’m working on a doctorate in practical theology that has taken on an interesting focus. My work in law enforcement raised my curiousity in the still emerging field of crisis intervention and I became involved with the Region J Critical Incident Stress Management Team. As a result, my interests in crisis intervention and biblical counseling have culminated in a dissertation examining the benefits and complications of integrating the two to increase the effectiveness of pastoral crisis interventions.
Apart from work and school, there are a number of other activities I’m involved with including:
- Ministry - I’m an ordained minister at First Baptist Church of Alamance. I enjoy preaching, teaching and pastoral care. I also enjoy church planning and administration. I developed and maintain our church’s website, AlamanceLife
- Community - I’m a volunteer mental health debriefer for the Region J Critical Incident Stress Management Team. I also developed and maintain the team’s website, TriangleCISM. I’m a NAMB-endorsed disaster relief chaplain with the North Carolina Baptist Men’s Disaster Relief.
- Speaking - I am available to speak at churches, conferences, workshops and retreats on a variety of topics including spirituality, crisis intervention, pastoral counseling, domestic violence, child abuse and safety. I am also available for interim pastorate and pulpit supply.
You should be able to tell from my posts that I’m a do-it-yourself nut. I love working with my hands and learning new skills, which can be seen in the dozen or so projects that are in-progress around my home. I’m into metal fabrication and woodworking (and have the scars to prove it!). I like old cars and have a love/hate relationship with a particular 1966 Ford Fairlane. I’m also a technophile, avid reader and news junkie.
I hope that’s given you a glimpse of who Marcus Orr is. I invite you to hang around and get to know me some more through my site. You can subscribe to my blog and I’d love to hear from you in the comments sections of my posts. You can reach me by email at marcusorr@marcusorr.com
